Providing year-round sports, activities and special events, the Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department is nationally accredited and recognized for its outstanding programs for children, adults, and seniors. In addition, the department manages and operates one of the finest equestrian facilities in the southeast at Wills Park. The Greenway system along Big Creek provides a safe and environmentally pleasing pathway for users to enjoy quiet leisure time.Due to the heavy rains and local flooding in our area, portions of the Greenway may be closed to the public on occasion.To find out today's status, please call the Parks Services Division at 678-297-6123.
Alpharetta Recreation & Parks Named Agency of the Year
On November 10th, Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department was named Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) 2005 Agency of the Year at the GRPA Annual Conference Awards Banquet in Cobb County. The Department, one of the first twenty-one agencies in the country to become nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, was recognized for excellence and leadership in the field of recreation.In 2005, the Department implemented several major capital improvements projects including the installation of a synthetic turf on a football field at North Park, completion of the North Metro Miracle League family center at the Alpharetta Adaptive Sports Complex at North Park, and design of two new park areas including a new neighborhood park on Cogburn Road. Further, the Department sponsored the GRPA Senior Section Workshop in March and hosted two GRPA district athletic events in the summer including the 11-12 year Baseball Tournament at Webb Bridge Park and the Class A Swimming Championships at Wills Park.
Department Director Mike Perry, Alpharetta City Council Member Jim Paine, and members of the staff accepted the award from GRPA Executive Director Tom Martin. Mr. Perry noted, "This award represents the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our staff, volunteers, elected and appointed officials, and the citizens who support our programs and services." Council Member Paine, liaison to the Recreation and Parks Department, commented, "All of us are proud of the Department's most recent recognition. It is always special when the award comes from your own peers who are recreation and park professionals."
Alpharetta Recreation and Parks was also named GRPA Agency of the Year in 1994, 1999, and 2001. In addition, the Department received the "July is Recreation & Parks Month" Award at the GRPA Annual Business meeting on November 9th. This award recognized the efforts of Alpharetta Recreation and Parks to increase public awareness of the benefits of participating in recreation and parks programs. This is the third time the Department has won this award in the past six years.
Overseeing the Recreation and Parks department are members of the Recreation Commission who are Alpharetta citizens appointed by the Mayor of Alpharetta. The Recreation Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm.
