Cagle’s Dairy Agri-tainment:
Family Farm Days & Dixieland Master Cup Stock Dog Trials are fun for everyone at this working dairy farm during ‘Discover Cherokee!’ weekend. Fall fun in the Corn MAiZE from August through November.
The origin of Cagle's Dairy dates back to 1951 on this farm...although a dairy farm was operated here as early as 1923! Clayton and Estelle Cagle and two of their sons, Albert and Charles Cagle, started Cagle’s Dairy. Today Mark & Kelly Cagle along with their children operate the dairy. (All four sons had been in the dairy business until Mark left company in 1995 to pursue another career. In 2003 Len & David left the Company and Mark Returned to Cagle’s Dairy when Albert & Bernese Retired) Parts of the farm have been in the family since 1923.
Cagle's Dairy also operates the oldest continuously operating processing plant in the state of Georgia -- Etowah Maid Dairies, Inc. Cagle's Dairy started purchasing stock in Etowah Maid Dairies in 1959, and by 1972 we had purchased all of the stock in the company.
In 1972, Cagle's Dairy became a producer-processor and moved the processing plant from Canton to the family farm in Hickory Flat, Georgia. And today Cagle's Dairy is the only producer-processor left in the state of Georgia! A producer-processor is a dairy farm that has its own processing plant. Our milk never leaves the farm until it is ready for the consumer to buy. Etowah Maid Dairies also made history in 1961 when we marketed the first milk in plastic jugs in the United States.
As the community grew and became a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area they had a decision to make. The family was growing as the sons married and had families of their own. The cost of property limited the ability to increase the farm size to meet the growing needs of our larger family. The family had been a part of this community for many years and did not want to leave the community or farm that we love and had been a part of so long.
The decision was made that they would continue to operate a real working dairy farm and milk processing plant and at the same time provide educational farm tours for metro children. When they decided to do this they thought it was important for somebody to teach children about agriculture. There are very few places that the public can go to learn about agriculture. Our #1 goal is that children have fun and learn something about farming at the same time. Every urban child should learn that their food, including milk, is produced on a farm and not just a product of the local grocery store.
It is unfortunate most children no longer have a Grandma and Grandpa or an Uncle Ned that can provide a farm experience...but come on out to Cagle's Dairy and become part of the family!
Hickory Flat Community.
