Forsyth County Schools (FCS) serves close to 26,000 students and is the largest employer in the county with over 3,100 full-time employees and 1,000 substitutes. Our schools are experiencing this ever-increasing growth rate as more and more families are attracted to our smaller, caring schools where the type of personalized education they are seeking for their children is available and where excellence is the standard. Currently, FCS is home to 25 schools - fourteen elementary, six middle, three high schools, as well as one alternative school for middle and high school students, and a charter non-traditional high school. Plans call for the opening of fifteen new schools over the next six years to house our projected 2011 enrollment of 43,094 students. Annually, FCS student enrollment grows between 10 to 13%. Our schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and have exceeded the standards as defined and measured by the Georgia Department of Education. Forsyth County schools are recognized for their achievements in education. Georgia Schools of Excellence include four elementary schools: Chattahoochee, Midway, Mashburn and Big Creek; two middle schools: North Forsyth and Otwell; and two high schools: Forsyth Central and North Forsyth. The Schools of Excellence Program began in 1984. The nomination process focuses on several vital areas: student focus and support; school organization and culture; challenging standards and curriculum; active teaching and learning; professional community; leadership and education vitality; school, family and community partnerships; and indicators of success. In 2001, Big Creek Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School. Otwell Middle was also named a National Blue Ribbon School and a Georgia School of the Future. North Forsyth High School is one of six high schools in the nation to be recognized as "Preparing America's Future" under the United States Department of Educations' New American High Schools Program.
FCS is also recognized in the state and across the nation for our achievements in instructional technology. A major addition to the two-to-one computing ratio in our schools was the installation 1,500 Interactive Whiteboards in all permanent classrooms. This was the largest installation of whiteboards in the world.
